Dear Friends of Music,
Since the founding of our parish, Calvary Episcopal Church has had a strong commitment to making music a prominent piece of its worship and liturgical life. As early as 1862, records indicate the Rector was interested in having a choir formed at Calvary. An enlarged chancel was added to the second church building some eight years after the building was completed, presumably to add seating for the choir. In 1887 a boy choir was formed.
This Fall, we will add a leaf to our history as we began a new chorister program for children and youth. These young people will be taught the basic fundamentals of healthy vocal technique and sight-singing and sing music from over four centuries. We look forward to welcoming and supporting these choristers as they grow and learn.
Our Chorale concerts are funded entirely by our generous donors and supporters. We are grateful to everyone who is able to support our mission of bringing beautiful sacred music to the parish and the wider community.
With the call of our new organist-choirmaster, a special list of musical events will soon be added. We hope you will be able to join us as often as you are able and that you will find these offerings, whether concert or liturgical, a special opportunity to experience God in the beauty of holiness through music and art. Thank you for your support of music and musicians in this place.
The Calvary Chorale
The Calvary Chorale is an extension of the Calvary Choir, the main liturgical choir at Calvary Church. The Chorale sings several concerts of sacred music throughout the year, often with orchestral accompaniment. The Calvary Chorale was founded in 1973 by then Organist-Choirmaster Howard Vogel and for the last forty-two years has presented a wide array of choral repertoire from across the centuries.
Sacred Space for Summit
Calvary Episcopal Church is a community of faith in the heart of Summit. We seek to be a Sacred Space for the Greater Summit Community, bringing the heart of Christ into the heart of the city by offering a broad array of spiritual, educational, artistic, civic engagement, and service opportunities to the greater community. We welcome all without regard to religious affiliation. We seek to provide a place for all people to deepen their faith, encounter God, and experience the beauty of holiness and the holiness of beauty in art and music through concerts, worship, and other special events.
